The Systems Architect is the senior technical authority responsible for designing, integrating, and governing Bernalillo County’s enterprise systems environment. The Systems Architect defines the strategic vision, standards, and long-term roadmap for county-wide systems. This role ensures that infrastructure, applications, and cloud services are aligned with organizational priorities, secure, and scalable to meet future demands.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and maintains the county’s enterprise systems architecture roadmap.
  • Leads the design of integrated solutions across servers, storage, virtualization, and cloud platforms.
  • Ensures interoperability, scalability, and resilience across all systems.
  • Establishes and enforces technical standards, policies, and best practices for system design and operations.
  • Documents architecture decisions and maintains enterprise-level diagrams and models.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including cybersecurity mandates.
  • Provides technical direction and mentorship to Systems Engineers and IT staff.
  • Serves as the escalation point for complex system issues and design challenges.
  • Collaborates with county leadership to align technology initiatives with organizational goals.
  • Evaluates emerging technologies and recommends adoption strategies.
  • Drives modernization initiatives such as hybrid cloud integration, automation, and zero-trust security.
  • Leads enterprise projects that transform county services through technology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field.
  • Ten (10) years of work experience performing development and analysis in a comparable complex information systems environment.

SCREENING AND COMPLIANCE

The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following:

  • Successful completion of a post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
  • Adherence to all County safety guidelines.
  • Complete all FEMA training(s) assigned to this position.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver’s license by the date of hire and maintenance of a valid license while employed in this position.
  • Complete required supervisor training, if applicable.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is typically performed in an indoor office environment but occasionally requires travel to other locations.
  • Work environments may include noise, dust and/or unpleasant odors, and may occasionally require work in confined spaces.
  • Occasional evenings, holidays, and/or weekend work may be required.

EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS

  • Equipment typically used in the performance of office duties includes a telephone, a computer keyboard, a printer, a photocopy machine, a facsimile machine, and a calculator.
  • Materials and products handled in the course of performing essential duties include files, forms, reports, various other paperwork, and a wide variety of basic office supplies.
