The BernCo Clean Community Maintenance Worker performs a variety of manual labor tasks to maintain and clean roadway rights-of-way, medians, sidewalks, and associated infrastructure. Duties include landscaping, graffiti removal, painting, and minor surface repairs. The position supports community beautification efforts and may assist other maintenance crews as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Assists with a variety of landscape maintenance tasks, including mowing, trimming, chipping, watering, planting, and repairing drip and sprinkler systems in road medians, trails, and right-of-way areas.
- Supports crews with thinning and pruning of trees, shrubs, and flower beds, and assists with weeding and general landscape care.
- Performs basic maintenance and repairs on surfaces such as concrete or plaster, including hole patching and crack filling.
- Sets up and maintains proper traffic control measures when working along active roadways.
- Removes snow or ice from sidewalks and pedestrian paths as needed.
- Operates and maintains groundskeeping and graffiti removal equipment such as sprayers, power tools, vehicles, and trailers.
- Prepares surfaces for painting using techniques such as washing, scraping, sanding, or sand-blasting; mix and apply paints, enamels, stains, and protective coatings.
- Paints buildings, structures, furniture, and other surfaces using appropriate tools and techniques; performs basic sign painting with stencils.
- Maintains tools and equipment in safe working order; reports any unsafe or inoperable equipment to a supervisor.
- Maintains accurate records of work orders and project progress, including before-and-after photos and routine reports.
- Supports graffiti removal and recycling activities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - High school diploma or GED.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
PREFERENCES - Experience with general landscape maintenance and painting.
- Experience operating power tools, hand tools, and landscaping equipment.
- Experience in general maintenance work or a related field.
- Knowledge of irrigation systems and drought-resistant landscaping.
- Familiarity with low-voltage landscape systems, telemetry devices, and backflow preventers.
- Traffic Control Technician certification preferred at time of hire.
SCREENING AND COMPLIANCE The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following: - Successful completion of a post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
- Adherence to all County safety guidelines.
- Complete all FEMA training(s) assigned to this position.
- Possession of a valid New Mexico driver’s license by the date of hire and maintenance of a valid license while employed in this position.
- Complete required supervisor training, if applicable.
- Must possess Traffic Control Technician certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS - Perform physically demanding work involving lifting, walking, climbing, stooping, and handling materials.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including snow, wind, and extreme temperatures.
- Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, fumes, and mists.
- Work on various surfaces, including uneven ground, inclines, and ladders.
- May use scaffolding and power equipment.
- Part of a team, works under supervision, and may be assigned flexible schedules.
- May work near or within active traffic zones.
EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS - Use equipment such as cameras, radios, ladders, scaffolding, power washers, sprayers, compressors, generators, chippers, weed eaters, and mowers.
- Use personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, boots, dust masks, earplugs, and respirators.
- Operate County vehicles during job duties.
