DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee and coordinate the routine maintenance of various storm sewer drain lines, including manholes, water quality sites, outfalls, drop inlets, catch basins, infiltrators, lift stations, and retention and detention ponds. Evaluate maintenance requests, troubleshoot and diagnose problems, and estimate time and materials required to complete jobs.
- Manage the scheduling and planning of work orders assigned to Storm Drain staff. Maintain accurate logs of work performed. Instruct and train staff on daily operations and on the repair or replacement of sump pump and storm pump systems, ensuring all work complies with current codes, manufacturer’s instructions, safety standards, and industry best practices.
- Identify and plan work to be completed by contractors. Obtain cost estimates and follow established procurement procedures. Provide technical assistance for new construction design.
- Establish preventative maintenance schedules based on manufacturer recommendations and automated Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system alerts. Ensure required work is performed in response to reports and alarms to restore systems to normal operations. Manage daily adjustments, comfort limits, and equipment start/stop times.
- Provide technical direction and on-the-job training to storm drain staff, including oversight of the Multismart system controls.
- Offer technical support and guidance on the use of heavy equipment and its various applications. Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical faults in equipment.
- Maintain various reports, monitor budgets and expenditures, and ensure accurate timekeeping for assigned staff.
- Respond to emergencies during regular shifts and after hours, taking appropriate corrective action to restore system operations.
- Contribute to performance evaluations, recommend new hires, and inform management of disciplinary concerns.
- Serve as the on-call coordinator for the Storm Drain Maintenance Program, addressing after-hours callouts and emergencies.
- Respond to, mark, and clear all Bernalillo County Utilities (BECU) and NM811 standard and emergency one-call notifications in accordance with State Statute Chapter 62 Article 14 NMSA 1978 (Excavation Law).
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources Engineering Technology or related field.
- Five (5) years of work experience in maintaining Water/Wastewater collections and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisitions (SCADA) related systems (to include Multi Smart control/efficient management systems.

- The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following:
- Employee must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination.
- Employee must comply with the safety guidelines of the County.
- Employee must have a valid New Mexico Class A, must include Tankers, Doubles ,and Triples endorsement Commercial driver’s license, and maintain a valid NM Class A Commercial driver’s license while employed in this position.
- Required Wastewater Certificate upon hire. Water 2 certification preferred.
- Required OSHA 10- or 30-hour certificate.
- Incumbent will have one (1) year from the date of hire to obtain a certification of the Curriculum of Operations from Vactor Manufacturing.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Performs work both indoors and outdoors, and is exposed to extremes of heat, cold, and humidity.
- Must be available for Standby/On call after hours and weekends, and holidays.
- Works in extreme weather conditions as required.
- Worker is exposed to intermittent noise and vibration factors.
- Worker will be “on-call” on a rotating basis and may also be on call for emergencies and work at any hour.
- Work is performed on hard surfaces, in occasionally wet conditions.
- Work hazards include steam, climbing of ladders, catwalks, entry into crawlspaces, operation of a county vehicle, risk of lacerations, burns, contusions, and other injuries, and exposure to high-pressure fluids and gases.
EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS
- Utilizes county vehicle, telephone, and laptop.
- Utilizes common Storm Drain tools including (but not limited to): wrenches, concrete tools, forming equipment, brazing, welding torch, electrical testing equipment, saws, hand tools, power tools, ladders, and other customary equipment.
- Acids, solvents, lead soldering flux, pipe thread lubricants, and sealants.
- Safety equipment may include safety goggles, masks, a hard hat, and rubber boots.
