POSITION SUMMARY

Construction Lab Technician performs a variety of routine and complex tasks involving material testing for construction projects. Monitors laboratory testing on samples of materials such as soil, concrete, and asphalt from construction sites to determine conformity to specifications, verify test results, and prepare reports describing procedures used.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor laboratory testing on samples of materials such as soil, concrete, and asphalt from construction sites according to prescribed standards to determine conformity to specifications. Verify test results and prepare reports describing the procedures used.
  • Monitor and participate in the collection of material samples from construction sites.
  • Monitor and participate in the testing of surfacing materials to ensure conformance with plans and specifications.
  • Oversee compaction and gradation testing.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience totaling four (4) years in general construction practices.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

PREFERENCES

  • Experience in construction and/or testing of roadways, earthworks, underground utilities, culverts, bridges, and other public works facilities is preferred.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must attain the following certification(s) within nine (9) months of employment:
  • Approved asphalt testing certification
  • Approved aggregate/soil testing certification

SCREENING AND COMPLIANCE


The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following:

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Duties are performed primarily outdoors which entails exposure to extremes of weather conditions.
  • Indoor duties are performed in a temperature-controlled environment on an even carpeted or tiled surface.
  • Outdoor duties may be performed on both even and uneven surfaces which may be either wet or dry. Surfaces may be inclined or flat, and range from natural undisturbed soil to gravel, asphalt, or concrete.
  • Performs duties alone or as part of a group.
  • Work hazards or potential work hazards include exposure to noise, vibration, dust, exhaust fumes, mists, and severe weather conditions; driving of vehicles; working in and around heavy equipment; performing duties on rough terrain.


EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS

  • Equipment typically used in the performance of duties includes telephone, two-way radio, computer, printer, copy machine, laboratory equipment, and measuring devices.
  • County vehicle is used by employee in traveling from site-to-site throughout the County.
  • Safety vest and hard hat are used by worker in performance of outdoor duties.
