POSITION SUMMARY

The Pool Operations Specialist oversees the safe and effective operation of the pool facility, including programs, staffing, and equipment. Serves as the lead for lifeguards, manages scheduling and timekeeping, ensures compliance with training and certification standards, and maintains safety records. Monitors and adjusts pool chemicals, performs routine maintenance, manages facility records and reports, and ensures financial accountability for pool-related transactions. Responds appropriately to emergencies and maintains a safe, welcoming environment for all facility users.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor and adjust pool water chemistry to maintain safe chemical balance in compliance with environmental health regulations. Represent the County Aquatics Program in meetings with health and risk management officials.
  • Oversee the collection, accounting, and delivery of pool revenues to the County’s designated bank. Monitor facility budget, make assigned purchases, and ensure compliance with facility contracts and user agreements.
  • Perform or schedule regular maintenance, including draining, cleaning, refilling, and adjusting pool equipment to ensure safe, efficient operation of the pool and surrounding areas such as turf, deck, and parking lots.
  • Supervise lifeguards, schedule shifts, and maintain accurate timekeeping records. Ensure lifeguards meet performance standards and receive required training; maintain training documentation and ensure all certifications remain current.
  • Monitor the swimming areas to prevent accidents or injuries. Enforce rules, assist in rescues, and administer first aid or CPR as needed. Notify emergency services when necessary.
  • Prepare monthly reports, chemical control logs, facility operation records, and required EPA documentation.
  • Coordinate the facility schedule for public and private use, ensuring adequate supervision is in place. Assist with planning and preparing for special events and activities.
  • Handle sensitive or confidential records, documents, and decisions with discretion.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Four (4) years of work experience in swimming and lifesaving practices.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Certified Pool Operator, Red Cross Lifeguard Training, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) certifications are required.

SCREENING AND COMPLIANCE

The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following:

  • Employee must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
  • Employee must comply with the safety guidelines of the County.
  • Employee must have a valid New Mexico driver’s license by employment date and maintain a valid NM driver’s license while employed in this position.
  • Copies of required certifications must be submitted with application and must remain current while employed in this position.
  • Employee must complete required FEMA training(s) as assigned to position.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Employee is outdoors 75% of time when assigned to outdoor pool; employee is outdoors 25% of time when assigned to inside pool.
  • Indoor duties are performed in a temperature-controlled environment; however, worker is exposed to wet cement and mat surfaces while working. Outdoor surfaces include concrete, asphalt, ramps, stairs, wood decks, and ladder chairs.
  • Work hazards or potential work hazards include the exposure to dangerous emergency situations involving rescue, hazardous chemicals, and possible exposure to bodily fluids from persons with life-threatening diseases.
  • Flexible work hours may be required.


EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS

  • Employee handles writing utensils, various paperwork, files and reports in the documentation of statistical reports, daily pool chemistry logs, daily bank deposits, and ordinary office record keeping.
  • Employee handles hazardous materials (possible cancer-causing particles) to include chlorine gas, chlorine bleach, hydrochloric acid, sodium bisulfate, sodium thiosulfate, carbon dioxide gas, sodium bicarbonate, calcium chloride, muriatic acid, calcium hypochlorite, and other such pool chemicals.
  • Employee utilizes a filter mask when handling some hazardous chemicals.
